The Sixth Stop: 80 Days of Walking in Shanghai – Painting and Calligraphy in Fans
n the process of the creation of classical Chinese calligraphy and painting, apart from the use of regular Xuan paper as writing material, the fan surface is also preferred by many calligraphers and painters, and the fan surface is a folding fan and a circular fan. The folding fan is written without the fan bone and should be spread out into a semi-regular shape to be smooth enough for the calligraphy brush. The appearance of folding fans can be traced back to the Northern and Southern Dynasties, and later became popular in the Song Dynasty through the artistic creations of literati artists. The circular fan is usually round or polygonal symmetrical pattern made of silk satin with a handle, which can be used to draw inscriptions directly.
